Part 3 of 3: The Word Revealed

In a Secret Vault, deep beneath the ruins of the Temple there is a treasure. This treasure is not of gold, nor embedded with jewels, it is a word that no mortal tongue can speak, spoken only in silence and flame. It is a treasure of knowledge, the true name of God. This truth was hidden away from those unworthy to know it. For this word belongs to the master, which had fallen, this word hidden from those who have been taken into captivity.

After King Cyrus, founder of the Persian Empire, conquered Babylon and by means of a mysterious dreams he frees the captives to return back and rebuild their temple. This was achieved through the actions of a Prince Mason known as Zerubabel, who would lead his people back to the Promised Land. The Knight Masons, York, and Scottish Rites have degrees, which deal with the period in time in which Zerubabel led his people back to the Promised Land and the rebuilding the Temple. During the rebuilding the Samaritans kept attacking the builders causing them to labor with a trowel in one hand and a sword in the other. It was not until Zerubabel traveled to Persia to gain favor with King Darius, the new King of Persia after Cyrus, to send an order out to protect and aid in the building of the Temple. Zerubabel is challenged to a contest of philosophy in which he outwitted the wisest satraps from the furthest reaches of the empire winning favor with the King gaining his support for the construction efforts. (Ezra 6: 3-13)

It is soon after this time Zerubabel leads an excavation effort to rebuild the temple and upon clearing the ruins of the old Temple then discover a secret vault. Upon digging deeper they discover the lost word and revere its glory. In Royal Arch Masonry the Name is composed of the Hebrew Letters Yod Heh Vau Heh within a triangle encased by a secret codex to preserve its secrets from the uninitiated.

To seek the name of Divinity is to understand the ineffable. As Masons we strive as men of different religions, races, social statuses, to unite in the search for what unites us, our inner divinity. Upon receiving the word in this Pinnacle point of Masonic teaching, the seeker must pass through the veils of space and time itself. The Passing of the veils was first adopted in Scottish Royal Arch Masonry but was soon spread as a strong experience for the Royal Arch Mason who must pass through the veils of the temple. It is pointed as the way the Tabernacle in the wilderness was situated with different compartments. But this is rather symbolic of the nature of High Priesthood. The High Priest would have to purify himself with ritualistic ceremony before beholding the Ark of the Covenant in the Sanctum Sanctorum. These ceremonies involved the Priest passing through the various furniture of the temple.

The First veil is engraved with an Ox, which is representative of the Table of Shrew Bread, which the Priest would partake of. This is also representative of the element of Earth as found in part of the Cherubim found in Ezekiel’s vision. (Ezekiel 1) This also has a astrological correspondence with Taurus the bull.  The Second Veil that of a man, which represented the Laver of Brass where the priest would ceremonially bath and purify himself. This represents the water element within the Cherubim, and has a strong astrological correspondence with Aquarius the water barer. The Third Veil is the Eagle and is associated with the Altar of incense the Priest would make a sacrifice on and burn the remains to smoke that would rise to the heavens. This is related to the Air element within the Cherubim and is associated with Scorpio the risen Eagle.  The Forth veil bears the Lion representative of the Twelve Branch Candle Stick the Priest would meditate upon. This veil is associated with the Fire element of the Cherubim and is associated astrologically with Leo the Lion.

Each emblem is also representative of a dominant tribe of Israel, such as the Tweleve Branch Candle stick represents the Twelve Tribes of Israel. But astrologically this can be interpreted as the four astrological seasons and the twelve zodiacs. It is interesting to note that the what appeared on Mizram’s tablet taken from the ruin’s of Enoch’s Stone Pillar is the rule “As Above, So Below” which means that the material world is a reflection of the heavens primarily the astrological alignments to express an ancient connection to the divine. This spiritual journey of the Priest was to show his spiritual advancement to be worthy and balanced enough to behold the presence of God to pray for the sins of his people.

“But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.” (Hebrews 9:7)

Now the Priest stood before the Sanctum Sanctorum, to view with all connection to God the ineffable name and the Ark of the Covenant in its fullest glory. This process was used as a metaphor to show the divine connection we have through Jesus death this is representative to the spiritual purity of the Christ to die for our sins just as the High Priest would purify himself and pray for the sins of his people. “the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf.” (Hebrews 6:19-20)

To behold the name of God in the climax of the Royal Arch is to follow in the steps of Christ, to balance one’s true self between heaven and earth, the material elements and the spiritual elements. As Christ is both man and God so must the Seeker of the word recognize his inner divinity is a connect to God.

“For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place” (Hebrews 9:24-26)

The unity the Seeker discovers is represented by the cherubim atop the Ark of the Covenant no long segmented into an ox, man, eagle, and Lion but unified and represented as one angelic being which represents spiritual ether. The Cherubim guard the Ark and the Word just as the Cherubim first guarded the entrance to the Garden of Eden the Pathway to the Tree of Life, which has a strong connection to Kabalistic principals. This unity of the spiritual and the material is a great awakening within the Seeker of the word, clearly he now he recognizes the unity of nature with God, now he sees the beauty of the living arch stretching from the earth to the heavens.

Part Two of Three: The Builders

That Ineffable Name, meaning the Self-Existent Being who is infinite without Beginning, or End. This Ineffable word having been hidden by the patriarch Enoch faded from memory until it was revealed to Moses in the burning bush. Following the Exodus, Moses had the Name engraved upon a plate of gold and placed it in the Ark of the Covenant which was constructed to hold the remains of the Ten Commandments, and there it remained until the time of Joshua and the Judges who ruled after him. Moses was forbidden to utter the true pronunciation to the people, just as modern Jews are afraid to do to this day, he communicated it to Aaron and to Joshua; and it was afterwards made known to the Chief Priests alone who revered it in sacred ritual.

The Ineffable Word remained in the Ark until the time of Othniel, the younger brother of Caleb (Judges 3:8-10) in a battle against King of Syria. The Syrians ambushed a group of Levites, the keepers of the Ark, carrying the ark and the ark fell upon the ground the keepers of it slain by the Syrians. The Syrians never had time to plunder the Ark due to Lion who had guarded it. The Lion was holding the golden key to the Ark in his mouth. It was only upon the approach of the High priest or the keeper’s of the Ark, the lion would with draw to the forest laying down the key. This celebrated in the Scottish Rite Southern Jurisdiction upon the golden key worn by the Grand Treasurer, you see the initials of these words: In Ore Leonis Verbum Inveni which means “In the Lion’s mouth I found the Word.”

In the time of Samuel (1 Sam. 4) the word was lost yet again due to the Philistines capturing the Ark. The Philistines killed Ophni and Phineas, the sons of Eli, then took the Golden Plate from the Ark with the Word inscribed on it and melted it into the image of their fertility and fishing God Dagon causing the Ineffable Name to be lost again.

Time passed, as the word was lost again until the time of Solomon. Upon laying the foundation for the great Temple of Solomon upon the base of Mount Moriah the builders Adonhiram, Joabert and Stolkin stuck a compartment buried deep in the earth, they had discovered a Secret Vault. They reported to King Solomon, and him fearing of it being an ancient Pagan temple ordered the builders to excavate it. Upon which upon excavation the Builders discovered a vault, which lead down through eight other vaults leading deeper into the darkness. They then found a long and narrow passageway, which led to the ninth vault, which was under the space, which would become the Holy of Holies of the Temple.

Discovering the lost word
They had discovered the cube of Foundation and the Mysterious Name, and delivered it to King Solomon. The two Kings, after much deliberation, determined what to do with this discovery. They decided to deposit the Word in a secret vault to be constructed under the Sanctum Sanctorum. The stone of foundation was so deposited as the cornerstone of the temple, so that the Temple of Solomon may be the physical manifestation of God on Earth.

At this first cornerstone laying ceremony it is said the workmen came forth and gave of their wages of corn, wine, and oil then they all knelt and returned thanks to God. Then the correct pronunciation of the Sacred Name was permitted to three masters Adonhiram, Joabert, and Stolkin within the secret vault.

In Cryptic Masonry King Solomon had constructed a narrow passageway that lead from his palace to the ninth vault was in that apartment King Solomon held his private conferences with King Hiram of Tyre and Hiram Abiff where the long lost Ineffable Word was revealed to them. After the Death of Hiram Abiff the two kings abandoned the secret vault never again to return until they found a suitable replacement for the fallen master.

Both Cryptic Masonry and the Ineffable Degrees have similar lore which differ slightly after Solomon’s abandonment of the Sacred Vault, he assigned guards stationed guarding the approaches to the Sacred Vault, the oldest being stationed at the entrance to that Vault, and the others respectively at the entrances of the other eight, or in the Cryptic Rite there is but one Guard at the front entrance, Zabud a dear friend to King Solomon.

Hiram Abiff constructed the private entrance to the Secret Vault with the aid of Phoenician Architects who were initiates of the Mysteries sworn to secrecy as to its existence. No one knew of it except the two Kings and those three Masters. To none others was the Ineffable Name communicated, it was lost to all those of an inferior degree. Those who were not worthy to know the word were given only the substitute, adopted at the death of Hiram Abiff, as the Master Mason’s Word.

The Ineffable Name remained in the Secret Vault hidden from prying eyes and faded into memory. When Nebaconezzer, King of Babylon invaded with his armies he burned the temple to the ground and plundered Israel taking the Jews into captivity back to Babylon. But the Sacred Vault remained unspoiled and unnoticed by the foreign invaders. So the word was lost again.

Part One of Three: The Stone of Foundation

Enoch
My Brethren, within the Masonic system the search for the Lost Word is at the root of individual transformation; both the York and Scottish Rites have together an extensive mythology surrounding this quest to utter the true name of God. This search is masonry’s quest for the Grail, its mythology stretches across biblical history, as every individual Mason must walk the steps to utter the ineffable word, which became lost.

The mythology of the Lost Word begins at the moment of creation itself. God declared the awe of light in the darkness and all came to Being. At this Moment God enacted the spark or creation which masons revere as the Stone of Foundation, the corner stone to which all creation was built. According to Albert Mackey, 33° the stone of foundation is “one of the most important and abstruse of all symbols of Freemasonry. It is referred to in numerous legends and traditions not only of the Freemasons, but also of Jewish Rabbis, the Talmudic writers, and even the mussulman doctors.” (Mackey, p.772) The stone of Foundation appears in numerous degrees, in both York, and Scottish Rite ritual as not only the presence of God but the foundation of his creation. Masonic Talmudists called it “eben shatijah” or the cornerstone laid by Jehovah at the moment of creation. The Stone is mentioned in the Biblical Book of Job 38, v. 4-7, in which the Almighty states “Where wast thou, when I laid the foundation of the Earth? Declare, since thou hast knowledge! Who fixed its dimensions, since thou knowest! Or who stretched out the line upon it? Upon what were its foundations fixed? And who laid its corner-stone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy.”

Church of St. Germain
The Stone of Foundation in legend was originally representative of God’s presence on Earth and was utilized as the first altar by Adam in the Garden of Eden. After their expulsion from paradise it was the only item Adam was able to carry out of paradise.  It passed in succession from father to son passing through the lineage of man to Jared the Father of Enoch whom the apocryphal book is written. Book of Enoch speaks of the “stone which supports the corners of the Earth.”

This is central to Masonic myth especially in the Ineffable degrees, Cryptic, and Royal Arch Masonry, which alludes to Enoch and his journeys through heaven, of angels known as the watchers, and a race of giants known as the Nephilum, which terrorize the lands until being destroyed by the Flood.

Enoch, the son of Jared, was the sixth in descent from Adam. It is said that Enoch "walked with God: and he was not; for God took him," (Genesis 5:22-29). Enoch had a dream in which Supreme Deity appeared to him and said, “Enoch, thou hast longed to know My True Name. Arise and follow me, and thou shalt learn it”. Then Enoch ascended, to a mountain summit, which was high above the clouds, and the stars of the heavens. There he saw letters of brilliant light appear upon the clouds and form it mysterious and ineffable name, appeared in bright letters of the angelic alphabet. The pronunciation of the name was prohibited from being uttered by any man. This ineffable name would become the lost word of the ancient craft. Enoch then descended from the mountain summit down into the earth, passing through nine subterranean apartments, one below the other, going deeper into the earth. Each apartment was roofed with arches; in the ninth and lowest arch, he saw the Ineffable Name upon a triangular plate of gold, surrounded by brilliant rays of light, upon the stone of foundation, thereupon he awoke.

Church of St. Merri at Paris
Enoch awoke with divine inspiration to search for this sacred mountain and full fill God’s vision to construct the secret vault of nine arches which would survive the flood which God told him would soon overwhelm world in a vast sea of ruin to destroy the Nephilum who were the abominations of the fallen angels and mortal women. He journeyed to the land of Canaan, and discovered Mount Moriah as the place to build his secret vault with his son Methuselah.  Canaan was then populated with the descendants of Adam; who Enoch enlisted as workmen for the construction his secret vault. At the base of the mountain they excavated a vault of nine apartments as he had seen in his dream. Down in the lowest of the Arches he placed the stone of foundation, upon the pillar of beauty, which was of white alabaster adorned with Enochian or the angelic language. The pillar was triangular and hollow, and into it flowed a stream of inflammable air that burned continually with a brilliant light. Upon the stone he placed a triangular plate of gold, inlaid with many precious gems, there he engraved the Ineffable Name of God, and sank the plate into one face of a cube, which he then placed upon a pedestal. There the precious treasure might remain undiscovered and remain to preserve the knowledge of God’s true name.

God feared that in the flood all knowledge of the arts and sciences would be lost. So Enoch was also commanded to build two great columns upon a high hill, one of brass, to resist water, and one of granite, to resist fire. So that one may withstand the End by water and the other to withstand the end by fire. Upon the granite column he engraved a description of the subterranean apartments and of the treasure that was deposited there. On the brass pillar were inscribed all the rudiments of the arts and sciences then known as the great truths of Masonry. During the flood the granite column was swept away by the waves and characters upon it lost to those who would seek to find the Ineffable Word, fragments of the granite Mizraim, (Gen. 10:6,13 and 1 Chron.1:8,11), afterwards was told to have carried into Egypt.

Only the brass pillar stood true and was afterwards found by Noah, who sought in vain for that of granite, which had the inscription upon which he knew from his Grand Father Methuselah, the son of Enoch. The true name of God remained lost.

Dr. Oliver wrote loosely of the Stone and the Word in his Historical Landmarks, “when he had placed the celebrated Stone of Foundation, on which the sacred name was mystically engraven, with solemn ceremonies, in that sacred depository on Mount Moriah, along with the foundations of Dan and Asher, the centre of the Most Holy Place.”

The word was lost until God spoke unto Moses, in the flaming bush:

“I am that which was and shall be. I am the God of thy Fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac and of Jacob. Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel, I am has sent me unto you. I am the Lord that appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob by my name Al Shedi, but my name I did not show them.”
